Living proof that community projects flourish Posted On 14 January 2022

Run-down bowling club becomes base for hard-working charity

The sense of community is strong in Tottenham, as you would expect from an area once described as deprived but now, according to some reports, to be well on its way to becoming the capital’s “next contemporary suburb”.

According to one estimate, there are between 200 and 300 different languages and dialects spoken in an area where massive regeneration is expected to give this part of north London a huge facelift before 2025.

Yet scratch the surface of this glittering façade and there is a beating heart which, to borrow the title of one group, brings unity to the community. Because, as another would have it, we are all Living Under One Sun.

Living Under One Sun is a community organisation and charity with a community café, hub and garden at Down Lane Park and an allotment at East Hale Allotments. It grew out of an unused and run-down bowling club and is a now a safe meeting place for residents and is the space where projects, classes and activities are hosted.

Their core ambition is to deliver programmes bringing nature, sports, well-being and harmony into the community, and they stage several weekly projects, services and activities doing just that. Their allotment, again on previously under-used land, had more than 100 locals working the soil within a year after it was bought from the Lee Valley Park Authority. It has also received a Green Flag Community Award every year since 2009.

It was also a winner of Haringey in Bloom 2014 Best Community Allotment, and their Blooming Beds and Bees project was shortlisted from 600 projects for a National Lottery Award in 2016. It now has an apiary with six hives and from where the “Made in Tottenham With Love” honey is produced.

They freely admit that volunteers are essential to their work and run volunteer days every Saturday. They also encourage corporate volunteering, and more details can be found on www.livingunderonesun.co.uk
